Describe the french division of society ?

The french society was divided into 3 divisions that were clergy, nobility and 3rd estate.

clergy consisted of the high priests and they did not have to pay taxes.

nobility consisted of the king and the and the peole who were very rich and wealthy and even they dont have to pay taxes.

the 3rd estate consisted of peasants, farmers, lawyers, some middle class minsters, etc and they all had to pay taxes.

  • France before French Revolution ( 1789 ) was a feudal society
  • At that time the french society was divided into 3 estates :
  • The First Estate was the Clergy . They owned alot of land and were hence most powerful. This was because land was the source of power .
  • The Second Estate was the Nobility . This included the Royal Family and the higher officials
  • The Third Estate was itself divided into 3 parts which included    1) Rich businessmen ,industrialists etc.   2) Rich peasants  and  3) Surfs (landless peasants).
  • The first and second estate were the most powerful . They were entitled to priveledges by birth such as exemption from paying taxes , fuedal dues etc.
  • However , the third estate bore the burden of taxation. This group was not entitled to any priveledges.

      Nobility are the king and the people under him like soldiers , etc.They also did not have to pay the taxes.
        3rd estate consisted of other workers, peasants and many.They were only people who wanted to pay the taxes.
