In ancient times , the northern side of India the village headman was known as Gram Bhojakas.This position was hereditary as many generations of same family held the position of village usually the largest landowner of village was made Gram Bhojaka.He had many slaves and hired labourers to cultivate the fields.He often collected taxes for king from his village.Sometimes he functioned as judge also.
