The Gupta period marks the beginning of Indian temple architecture. The temples had peculiar features. They were  Flat rooted, square in shape  with a covered ambulatory around the sanctum and proceeded by a pillared porch.  Rock cut caves also form another notable feature of Gupta architecture. Some of the caves at Ajanta and Ellora (Maharashtra) and Bagh (M.P.) may be depicted to the Gupta period. Stupas were also built during Gupta Period and the one at Sarnath is a remarkable one.
