The fact of the reduction in the water level and the pleasant weather had relieved the voyagers. But their relief was short lived as by the time it was four, the clouds started turning dark. The voyagers began losing their hopes. On january 5th, the sky was again covered by dark clouds. The voyagers were losing so much hope that the captain's son (Jonathan) had asked his father whether they would die and even assured his father that he was not afraid of dying. The fact of the son giving such remarks made the captain to put his full effort in bringing their hopes back. That evening, Mary and the captain were sitting and holding their hands with both of them feeling that their end was very near. This shows that overall, all the voyagers had lost their hopes.
