Describe the Restrictions modification system with proper diagram.(3 M)

Solution:

The Restriction Modification System is a defence mechanism present in a number of prokaryotes such as bacteria. It acts as a defence mechanism against the invasion by bacteriophages.
The Restriction Modification System consists of a combination of an endonuclease enzyme and a methylase
enzyme. This combination varies in different types of bacteria.
The Restriction Modification System helps in identifying the methylation status of the DNA of the invading bacteriophage which enable the bacterial cell to differentiate between self and non-self (foreign) genome.
The endonuclease enzyme works by making cuts at specific locations in the DNA strand of the invading bacteriophage which prevents it from hijacking/taking over the bacterial cell machinery for it's own replication.
