Describe the structure of root apex and shoot apex .

Dear student,
Please find below the solution to the asked query

Root apex is the region present at the tip of the root. It consists of the following regions:
  • Root cap: This covers the root apex.
  • Apical meristem: Region of rapid cell division.
  • Quiescent centre: These are cells of apical meristem which have low mitotic activity.
  • Zone of cell division: Referred as primary meristem, divides continuously.
  • Zone of elongation: Cells elongate in this zone.
  • Zone of maturation: Cells become fully matured and functional.

Shoot apex or apical meristem is enclosed in the leaf primordias, shoot apex has three main regions:-

1. Central zone, at the tip of the shoot apex.

2. Peripheral zone, at the lateral sides of the shoot apex.

3. Rib zone, at the center of the shoot apex.

It also has two layer L1 and L2 covering the surface of the shoot apex.
