It is the movement of molecules against the
concentration gradient, i e , from a region of lower concentration
to a region of higher concentration
It is the movement of molecules along the
concentration gradient, i e , from a region of higher concentration
to a region of lower concentration

Energy is required in the process ATP are
consumed
Energy is not required in passive transport

Example: Movement of ions like Na+ and
H+ across the cell membrane occurs by active
transport
Example: Movement of gases (like oxygen), water
across the cell membrane occurs through passive transport
