difference between active transport and passive transport

Dear Student,

The differences between active and passive transport are:

Active transport Passive transport
It is the movement of molecules against the concentration gradient, i.e., from a region of lower concentration to a region of higher concentration. It is the movement of molecules along the concentration gradient, i.e., from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration.
Energy is required in the process. ATP are consumed. Energy is not required in passive transport.
Example: Movement of ions like Na+ and H+ across the cell membrane occurs by active transport. Example: Movement of gases (like oxygen), water across the cell membrane occurs through passive transport.
