It is a which is released from the beta cells of islets of Langerhans, special regions in pancreas, and stimulates absorption of glucose from the blood in liver cells and its conversion into glycogen hormone  It is a storage product and replaces the function of starch in those plants in which it is produced
Its deficiency causes diabetes mellitus. It has no hormonal role thus deficiency results in no malfunction, except shortage of stored food.
