Only one difference is found in the two masses, as actually molecular mass is the mass of one unit of a molecule (molar mass) of covalent compounds while for ionic compounds mass of one molecule unit is called formula unit mass because, ionic compounds have no overlapping rather the ions are separated but remain attached due to electrostatic force of attractions and so they are considered to be formula unit and so their mass is formula unit mass.
Difference between molecular mass and formula unit mass:
- Theformula mass(formula weight) of a molecule is the sum of the atomic weights of the atoms in its empirical formula while themolecular mass(molecular weight) of a molecule is its average mass of the atomic weights of the atoms in the molecular formula.
- Formula unit mass is mainly applied to ionic compounds while molecular mass is applied to covalent compounds.
