Different enzymes work best at different pH values. Give an example of one enzyme that works in acidic pH only.

Dear Student,

Pepsin enzyme is active in acidic pH only. They do not work in basic or neutral pH. The hydrochloric acid makes the acidic medium in stomach and hence convert inactivated form of pepsin into activated form. Pepsin is responsible for the digestion of proteins. It breaks proteins into proteases and peptides.

The one depicted by the green curve might represent the pH optimum for the enzyme pepsin which degraded proteins (protease) in the vert acidic lumen of the stomach. The second curve (in red) might represent the enzyme carbonic anhydrase that works in the neutral pH of your cytosol.
