The third level of decentralization of power in India is the level of local government. In rural areas, this takes the form of panchayati raj. Panchayati raj is in three levels. At the village level are village panchayats, at the block level are panchayat samities and at the district level are zila parishads. In urban areas, local government consists of municipal corporations and municipal councils.
