During athletic meet of a school, five students namely Ram, Shyam, Atul, Anil and
Abhinav took part in 1000 metres race. Ram and Anil are fast friends. Anil is a good
sportsman and he won first position in 200 m race every year. The race started and
all of sudden,as a result, Anil fell down and could not complete the race. Ram
completed the race in 300 seconds and Shyam completed in 500 seconds. Racing
track was circular in shape with radius 100m. Atul completed his race only half of the
track.
Answer the following questions based on the above paragraph.
1. Find speed of Ram ?
2. Define average Speed?
3. Find Speed of Shyam?
4. Find displacement of Shyam.
5. Find displacement of Atul?
6. Give difference between distance and displacement?

Dear Student,
Given,
  • Race is of 1000 m
  • Race track is circular of radius R = 100 m
  • Ram completes the race in t = 300 s
  • Shyam completed the race in t = 500 s
  • Atul completed his race only half of the track
  • Anil fell down and could not complete the race.
Length of the race track, L=2πR=2×3.14×100=628m
Number of turns of the race track required to complete the race, N=1000628=1.59
1. Speed of Ram = 1000m300s = 103ms
2. Average speed is the ratio of the total distance travelled to the total time taken to cover the distance.
3. Speed of Shyam = 1000m500s = 2ms
4. Since, Shyam completes the race. So, it reaches to the point from where it starts. Hence, the net displacement of Shyam will be 0.
5. Atul completes only half of the track which means he stops at the diametrically opposite end of teh point from which he starts. Hence, its displacement is 2R = 200 m
6. Distance is the separation between the initial and final points along the path of motion while displacement is the straight line distance between the initial and final points of the journey.
