ecological succession on bare rocks

Dear Student,

Please find below the solution to the asked query:

On bare rock there is no soil so first of all the niche of the lichen start to grow on the rock. They release carbon dioxide, which gets mixed with rainwater, makes carbonic acid. The acid starts to break the rock into small sized pieces which wash down into depressions or cracks in the rock.

As a little bit of grit forms a small amount of soil in cracks in the rock, mosses start to develop on the rock. As the mosses die, the decaying matter starts to accumulate in the soil. Additions of pine needles and leaves further deepen the soil.

When there is enough collection of organic matter, seeds of certain plants may reach the place and start to grow.

With addition of soil, the seedlings continue to grow. The roots may split the rock, adding more room for soil. Ultimately, if enough soil develops there, a large tree may grow there.
