It is sometimes claimed that Indian culture is essentially a (a)village based and that it is tying to a handicraft economy. (b)Mahatma Gandhi's emphasis at the village as the center
(c) of Indian life did much to popular this idea. But the question
(d)has to be considering whether Indian life has any integrated
(e)relationship with the villages. From the earliest historical
(f)times we know of, the culture was dominated by the towns (g)and cities. The very word Nagarik, which comes to be identified
(h)with men of culture, meaning a man of the town.
