Because it had made them see western civilisation as superior and had destroyed the pride they had in their own culture. Education in English had crippled them , distanced them from their own surroundings and made them strangers in their own lands.

Mahatma Gandhi felt that colonial education created a sense of inferiority in the minds of Indians and destroyed the pride they had in their own culture.
He argued that education was meant to develop a person’s mind and soul and that simply learning to read and write could not be counted as education.
With the spread of nationalist sentiments, views such as national education which would be radically different from that set up by the British came to the surface.
