1. The Bhagavad Gita is a a part of the Bhisma Parva of the Mahabharata
2. The Gita consists of the advice that Krishna gives Arjuna when he is filled with doubt about warring against his kith and kin. 
3. The Gita deals with the ways in which to attain moksha or liberation, through dharma (ethics), karma (work), bhakti (devotion) and jnana (knowledge). 
4. The Gita is one of the greatest texts produced in India and the world, and it has been commented upon by the likes of Shankaracharya, Madhava and Abhinavagupta in ancient times. 
5. Through the re-interpretation by Swami Vivekananda, Mahatma Gandhi and Bal Gangadhar Tilak, the Gita became instrumental in the ideology of Indian nationalism during the Independence Movement.
