Experts, please explain to me the What is Echolocation? And also explain the process of Echolocation in Dolphins and in Bats. Please explain to me the process in both of the organisms that too in brief...

Dear Student,

Echolocation is the process used by some animals to locate objects. They use SONAR technique for this purpose that is why this process is also called Bio-Sonar. In this technique, sound and echoes are used to find the direction and distance of objects.  Bats use echolocation to navigate and find food in the dark. For echolocation, bats use mouth or nose to send out sound waves. Then, the sound waves hit an object and produce echoes. The echo reflected from the object returns to the bats' ears. Bats figure out where the object is, how big it is, and its shape using these echoes. We know that:
            Distance = Speed×Time
Thus, They analyse the speed and time(between releasing sound and getting echoed sound back to their ear) in their brain and calculate the distance (which will be double the distance between object and them). Similar phenomenon is found in Dolphins.
