Explain.:

a. In the sixth period, after filling of 6p orbitals, the next electron ( i.e. 57th) enters the 5d-orbital against aufbau principal and there after filling of seven 4f- orbitals starts with cerium (Z=58) and end up with lutetium (Z=71). Explain the anomalous behaviour.

Dear Student,

Find your answer below:-

T
he reason behind it is 4f and 5d sub-shells have very similar energy levels, so  its difficult  to tell the difference between the two. That is why they have different configuration than the expected. i.e., 5d orbitals are filled and afterwards  4f orbitals are filled.

Because of there is no energy difference either the 5d - 4f pair or 6d  5f pairs are filled.
