As who pursued 12 with yell and blow
Still treads the shadow of his foe13  ,

The ship drove fast, loud roared the blast,
           And southward aye we fled.

51. And now there came both mist and snow,
And it grew wondrous cold :

Dear student,

Paragraph 45:
In this paragraph, the mariner says that the storm-blast attacked them with such great force from behind that the ship had to bend forward due to the high pressure. The mast of the ship slopped and its prow dipped in the sea water. The storm pursued them like a furious enemy yelling at them. The ship here is compared to a man, who was followed by an enemy very closely. It was as if the shadow of the enemy fell on the man while he ran fast with his head bend forward to save himself. The ship drove southward very fast chased by the violent storm.

Paragraph 51:
In the lines that you have mentioned, the poet tells us that soon after their journey began and everything seemed good till then, there was mist and snow suddenly covering their ship, it denotes the time when the ship reaches the south pole due to storm. The ship is surrounded by huge icebergs. Here, the ice is green due to reflection of the marine plants etc. beneath the sea. The poet has used the word 'emerald' to maintain the beauty of the poem.
