Explain productivity of ecosystem.
Dear Student
Productivity refers to the rate of formation of biomass in an ecosystem.
There are two types of productivity:
2. Net primary productivity - NPP = GPP – Energy lost by respiration
Productivity refers to the rate of formation of biomass in an ecosystem.
There are two types of productivity:
- Primary Productivity
- Secondary Productivity
Primary Productivity refers to the generation of biomass from autotrophic organisms like plants. It can be divided into two:
1. Gross primary productivity - solar energy trapped by the photosynthetic organism is called gross primary productivity. It depends upon the photosynthetic activity and environmental factors.2. Net primary productivity - NPP = GPP – Energy lost by respiration
Secondary Productivity
Heterotrophs influence secondary Productivity. Secondary productivity is the accumulation of energy at the consumer level. This is influenced by heterotrophs.
Unit of Productivity
Productivity is expressed in units of mass per unit volume per unit time.
