explain "silence surrounds us"??

There is no communication between the father and son, they have drifted apart and lost touch over the years as the son grew up. The silence that surrounds them speaks of their inability to reach out coupled with the longing to do so. It has been too long that they have shared things with each other so there is an awkward silence that envelops them.
