Explain the events that follow upto fertilisation when sperm comes in contact with ovum in the fallopian tube of female ?? 2 MARKS CBSE Foreign 2016

Dear student,
Please find below the solution to the asked query

Sperms enter through vagina during sexual intercourse and travel to oviduct to fertilize the egg cell. After fusion of sperm and egg, a zygote is formed. Then the zygote gets implanted in the lining of uterus and division starts occurring in zygote to become embryo.

Features of fertilisation in humans:
  • Fertilization is the process of fusion of the male gamete (sperm) with the female gamete (egg) resulting in the formation of zygote which further develops to form the fetus.
  • Fertlization is internal in humans as it occurs inside the body of the female.
  • Development of zygote is also internal i.e. humans are viviparous.
  • During the intercourse, sperm is ejaculated from the male reproductive system in the female reproductive tract. Sperm move through the uterus into the fallopian tube where it fuses with the egg present in the tube. Changes occur in the fertilized egg cell such that no other sperm can fuse with it.
  • This fusion of the male and female gamete brings together 23 chromosome of the male gamete with 23 chromosome of the female gamete, resulting in the formation of zygote containing 46 chromosome. This zygote further develops to form the fetus.
  • Divisions in zygote lead to formation of embryo.
