Explain the process of electrophoresis.

Electrophoresis: Electrophoresis is the phenomenon of movement of colloidal particles under applied electric potential.

  • Electrophoresis is the motion of dispersed particles relative to a fluid under the influence of a spatially uniform electric field.
  • It is ultimately caused by the presence of a charged interface between the particle surface and the surrounding fluid.
  • It is usually carried out in aqueous solution.
  • By using this technique, a mixture of molecules of various sizes will migrate at different velocities and will be separated.
