Explain why the electric field lines have a tendency to contract lengthwise.

Lengthwise contraction of field lines means that the field lines are less spaced near the line joining two opposite charges. They are more spacious when they are away from the central line. This happens on account of the attraction between the opposite charges.

If there were same charges, then the field lines would expand lengthwise
