Footprint without feet

Solution:
The sounds coming from the study quite early in the morning woke the clergyman and his wife.  They heard the money being frisked away from the deck as they descended the steps. He and his wife were taken aback when they couldn't see anyone in the space.
Because their money was taken but no one was in sight, he thought the entire burglary to be an extraordinary deed.
