Bill had not gone to colleges, nor did he know much about cities. But, according to the narrator, his adventures had taught him much about the importance of adopting a life of simplicity and laughter. He told the narrator a lot about the people of New Mullion: he spoke of their follies, but not to judge them. He understood and forgave their foolishness. He remained cheerful in such a muddy, dirty place and seemed to enjoy the simple life.
