3 C + 2 Fe → 4 Fe + 3 CO 2

In this reaction, iron oxide (Fe ) gives away its oxygen to carbon (C). In chemical terms, the carbon is said to be oxidized because it has gained oxygen. At the same time, the iron oxide is said to be reduced because it has lost oxygen.

Driving my car:

2C8H18 + 25O2 ===> 16CO2 + 18H2O

Heating my house with gas:

CH4 + 2O2 ===> CO2 + 2H2O

Using electricity from coal-fired plants:

C + O2 ===> CO2

If they are gas-fired, see CH4 above.

Metabolizing foods based on sugars and starches:

C6H12O6 + 9O2 ===> 6CO2 + 6H2O
