Dear student

Meiosis is a two step process broadly - Meiosis1 and Meiosis2
During metaphase 1 of meiosis 1 the duplicated chromosomes align at the metaphasic plate and during anaphase 1 the homologous chromosomes seperate and move to opposite ends,as the whole chomosome is moving instead of sister chromatids (which happens during meiosis2), which results in REDUCTION of number of chromosomes to half that is cell becomes haploid from diploid.
Hence first meiotic division or meiosis1 is a reduction division where word reduction signifies the reduced number of chromosomes which is essential for gamete formation.
