can any one tell me what does this sentence mean

The narrator asked the boys what the boys did with all the money they earned.They seemed to spend little on clothes and food.Nicola felt ashamed to answer such question.He coloured deeply under his sunburnt skin and finally turned pale.

Upon hearing the narrator's question, Nicola became cheerful and excited. He blushed suddenly. The pink colour on his face was so prominent that it was even visible beneath his dark sun burnt skin. Just then he had an afterthought which aroused in him. He was reminded of his ailing sister. They were collecting money for her treatment. Nicola and Jacopo were very hard working boys. They had to pay the bills of Lucia's treatement too. But these boys, so called gentelemen were so mature at such a tender age that they didnot wanted to share their plans with anyone, because they didnt want anybody's sympathy or kindness in terms of money which was not a fruit of their hardwork.
