The narrator asked the boys what the boys did with all the money they earned.They seemed to spend little on clothes and food.Nicola felt ashamed to answer such question.He coloured deeply under his sunburnt skin and finally turned pale.

Nicola became emotional at being reminded that with the kind of work that they do , they earn good money. However, he aiso grew pale because he was instantly reminded within himself the sad reason behind their choice of living so frugally which his selfesteem did not permit to share with the author .

The narrator was astonished to see that boys worked hard day and night and yet lived meagerly. He wanted to know what the boys did with the money they earned. When he questioned Nicola, he appeared uncomfortable. Perhaps the boys were not used to anybody questioning them regarding their earnings, and the narrators question embarrassed them.
