Dear student,
Neuroglial cell are supporting cells in the central nervous system.
Neuroglial cells are of two types:-
i) Macroglial cell :- They are ectodermal in origin.
ii) Microglial cell:- They are mesodermal in origin. They are macrophages to protect the central nervous system.
Types of macroglial cells
a) Astrocytes:- These cells are found in the central nervous system and form the blood brain barrier by projections which connect blood with the neurons.
b) Oligodendrocytes:- These cells cover axons in the central nervous system and forms myelin sheath.
c) Ependymal cells:- These cells are found in the central nervous system and line the spinal cord and ventricular system. They create and secrete cerebrospinal fluid and forms blood -CSF barrier.
d) Radial glia:- These cells are the progenitors of neuronal cells.
e) Schwann cells:- These cells forms myelin sheath of the axon in peripheral nervous system.
f) Satellite cells:- They regulate the concentrations of outside chemical. Example astrocytes shows response to ATP by increased concentration of calcium ion.
