Vallilammai or Valli was an eight-year-old girl. She was cheerful and was very curious to attain , knowledge on every worldly thing. She had planned to ride the bus to the town. She was intelligent and did not accept the offer of a free cold drink from the conductor, nor did she get down from the bus until she reached her destination. She got on to the bus as a young girl but her her reactions towards various incidences and conduct towards others made her look like a matured lady.
On the other hand, the elderly woman looked ugly. She had big holes in her earlobes with ugly earrings in them. She was chewing betel nut and the betel juice was about to spill over her lips. She looked unsociable to Valli and thus she did not talk to the elderly woman.
