How are ecosystems stratified?

Dear student,

Stratification of the ecosystem refers to layering of habitats within ecological communities.
Stratification of ecology(vegetation) refers to the vertical layering of a habitat and the arrangement of vegetation in layers. It classifies the layers (stratum or strata) of vegetation largely according to the different heights to which their plants grow. The individual layers are then inhabited by different animal and plant communities. The different layers or strata include, forest floor, shrub, herbaceous, canopy and understory layers.
Similarly, there is stratification of water on the basis of salinity, oxygenation and density, which acts as barrier to water mixing.

Regards.
