how can water pollution be measured?

Water pollution can be measured in three ways – physical, chemical and biological. Sample of water from polluted water bodies are collected and below mentioned tests are performed to determine whether water is polluted or not.

Physical tests: temperature, solid concentration etc. are measured.

Chemical test: measurement of pH, COD (chemical oxygen demand), nutrient content, presence of oil and grease, metal content etc. are measured.

Biological test: presence of animals, plants and microorganisms.

Water pollution is defined as the presence of pollutants like organic matter, toxic substance, microorganism etc in the water bodies which results in the contamination of water. The level of water pollution is measured by checking the levels of the various pollutants and there are various instruments used. Some of the methods are:
Secchi disks (to measure water clarity)
Probes (to detect organic matter and toxic metals)
Filters (to detect microorganisms)
Nets
Gauges and meters.

It can be measured by the no. of non - biodegradable polllutants : Heavy metals like mercury , salts etc.

 biodegradable pollutants : Domestic pollutants

and with the no. of bacteria & algae present in it.
