HOW CODON IS A TRIPLET

Dear student,
A codon is a triplet. It is because we know that there are 20 amino acids and to code for 20 amino acids we need only 4 nucleotides which are A, U, G and C.So, if a codon was a duplet we will have only (42 ) 16 possible codons. This is not enough to code for 20 amino acids.
So, if the codon is a triplet then we will have 43=64 possible codons and that are more than sufficient to code for 20 amino acids.
Hence, a codon is a triplet.
