How did early humans learn to make pottery?

The early humans made pottery to help themselves. Though there is no exact information as to how they invented it but the discovery of wheel was a milestone in the pottery making. It must have been difficult for them but they evolved the technology with time. They sometime must have made the pots sturdy or it might have had cracks that caused spilling of water from the pot.
