How did Jacobins come to power in France? What were the immediate results of the same?
The Jacobins came to power following the failure of the constitutional monarchy that had been constituted in France under the Constitution of 1791. The constitutional monarchy failed because of the refusal of the King Louis XVI to share power with with the Legislative Assembly. The clergy and the aristocracy also did not support the constitutional monarchy. Instead, these conservative elements encouraged the monarchies of Prussia and Austria to attack France. This led to the Legislative Assembly to abolish the monarchy. A new constitution was adopted on 20 September 1792 under which France became a republic.
The Jacobins came to power under the new republican constitution. The consequence of this was that the French Revolution entered its most radical phase. Very soon, under Robespierre, the Jacobins started the reign of terror in which anybody, including the royal family, who were suspected of opposing the Revolution were guillotined.
