how did short life span of garden pea plants help mendel choose them ?

Dear student,
Mendel chose the pea plants for his experiments because the garden pea is an ideal subject in the study of genetics for the following reasons:

-- presence of observable traits with contrasting forms
-- produces many offspring in one cross
-- short life cycle
-- ease in manipulating pollination (cross pollination)

Though it has short life cycle it is an ideal subject because the plants would produce progeny in short time and he could assess many plants at a same time due to the short cycle and many contrasting traits in those plants.
