How did the narrator feel when "she was in the midst of things in Mrs. Dorling's house"?

Dear student

When the narrator saw her things in Mrs. Dorling's house, she was horrified. She found herself in an "oppressive" situation as she saw her mother's items in a house that was not her own. This is because, by looking at the items, she was reminded of her past, and of her mother, the two things that she could not have anymore. She hated looking at the items in Mrs. Dorling's house and told herself that perhaps it was because of  "the tasteless way everything was arranged, because of the ugly furniture or the muggy smell that hung there."
