How do social interaction kill the innocence in a child ?

The poet's enquiry into the possible moment of loss of his childhood leads him to realize that it could have been the moment when he came to understand the real nature of adults. These are people who do not practice what they preach. They are not what they seem to be because they talked and preached of love but did not act so lovingly towards fellow human beings. The poet realizes that adults themselves do not follow these rules of conduct and engage in activities that disrupt the harmony of relationships, hurting each other. Grown-ups come across as hypocrites because of their double standards.
