How does paan-chewing produce red colour in our mouth?

We 
chew the betel leaf along with many ingredients like small bits of betel nut, lime and catechu (katha). ... When a coat of katha is applied above the lime layer, a chemical reaction takes place which makes the colour of katha redder. When we chew paan, the mouth also plays a role.
