How does static electricity work?

Dear student,
Static electricity works because of an imbalance between the positive and negative charge of the objects. These static charges generally are formed or build up on the surface of the objects. These will be present on the surface till the time they are released or discharged from that object.
For example, when we rub a balloon with our clothes and stick it to the wall is aslo because of the static electricity in which large amount of electrons are being transferred from the clothes to the balloon. Now, since the wall is positively charges, the negatively charged balloon gets sticked to it because we know that opposite charges attracts each other.

Thus, it is the transfer of electrons which causes the working of the static electricity.
