He uses his conversational skills and his imagination to stall the intruder. By the conversation he had had been having with the intruder, Gerrard gets to know the story and the intentions of the intruder. Thus, cleverly he tells the intruder that it would be useless for him to take his identity as he himself is wanted for a crime and would be arrested and executed if found. He lays out the story so convincingly that the intruder agrees to his plan to run away together. Gerrard uses the opportunity, pushes the intruder into a cupboard and locks him up there.
