There is great debate about when and how fire was discovered. But, there is evidence of hearths in Africa that date 1.5-2 million years old. Man may have observed lightning and other natural phenomena like volcanic eruptions capable of starting fires. Gradually, he learned to control and start fires using sticks and stones.
