How has Vikram Seth managed to unfold the theme of unity in diversity? Give examples especially highlighting is experience at the two places of worship visited by him.

Dear Student,

In the story 'Kathmandu', the author describes his visit to Kathmandu; the capital of Nepal. He visited the pashupatinath and the Baudhnath temples in Kathmandu. He describes the atmosphere of the Buddhist temple, Baudhnath temple, as calm and quiet. There are no restrictions and anybody from any religion could visit the temple. The place is also very relaxing as there are no noises or crowds around. On the other hand, the atmosphere at the Pashupatinath temple is chaotic. The entry to the temple is restricted to Hindus only and no foreigner or people from other religions could enter the temple. The place is noisy and filled with pilgrims, priests and even animals. Some people could also be seen elbowing the other pilgrims to gain entry inside the temple or get the priests' attention. Through this contrast, the writer tries to highlight the differences between the Hindu and Buddhist temples and the kind of pilgrims who visit them. The Buddhist temple is portrayed as a symbol of unity in diversity.
