how is mutation breeding advantages over conventional breeding

I think conventional breeding is something like when two species are crossed the offspring will have qualities of the parents ...which ever are high yielding....but mutation breeding involves some completely different characters....which may be useful and ....also it doesn't involve crossing bwn two species which may be a tedious process...
