how is vanilla an ol-factory indicator?

Dear student
Please find the solution to the asked query:

Olfactory indicators are the substances whose smell (or odour) changes in acidic or basic solutions. When an acid or base is added to it, then its characteristic smell cannot be detected.
Vanilla extract has a sweet pleasant smell. This scent is due to a compound called Vanillin present in the Vanilla Extract.
When Vanilla extract is added to a dilute solution of NaOH, the smell vanishes , but when it is added to dil.HCl solution, it retains its smell.

An Olfactory indicator is a substance whose smell varies depending on whether it is mixed with an acidic or basic solution. Olfactory indicators can be used in the laboratory to test whether a solution is a base or an acid, a process called olfactory titration. Onion , clove oil and vanilla extract are examples.
