ATP are not required but produced during fermentation.
Fermentation is the anaerobic respiration process. Only 2 ATP are produced per glucose during the processes of fermentation.

There are two types of fermentatio process..But here I will mention only about the alcoholic fermentation..

In alcoholic fermentation, the pyruvic acid is first decarboxylated ato acetaldehyde in the presence of Carboxylase with Thiamine pyrophosphate as the coenzyme...The acetaldehyde is then reduced( by NADH2 which is produced in the Glycolysis) to the ethyl alcohol by the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase..

The overall reaction may be represented as..

C6H12O6 ? 2 CH3CH2OH + 2 CO2 + 2 ATP

There is NO gain of ATP in the frementation process..The 2 ATPs are produced in the gycolysis
