How many thylakoids does a whole plant have

Dear Student,

Thylakoids are membranous sacs present in stacks called grana and are present in the chloroplast. The thylakoid contains the green pigment chlorophyll and are the main site of photosynthesis. There are around 10-100 thylakoid in a granum , and each cell contains 40-60 granna. As number of cells differ and are present in millions, so we can not say how many are present in whole plant.

Mature chloroplasts may contain 40 to 60 grana stacks with diameters of 0.3 to 0.6?m. The number of thylakoids per stack in mature thylakoids varies from

A cell from a leaf may contain from 20 to 100 chloroplasts. And each chloroplast has total 40 to 60 granum. And each granum stack contains 10 to 100 thylakoids. The data varies from plant to plant.

So, 20 chloroplasts multiply by 40 granum stacks multiply by 100 thylakoids , which is 80000 thylakoids per plant cell.

I don't know total number of thylakoids in a full plant but I know in each plant cell. If you know total no. of plant cells in particular plant, you can find it by multiplying 80000 by total no of plant cells= total thylakoids in plant.
