How onion is a leaf?

Onion is a modification of stem while its edible part is its swollen leaves with a bit of stem. The onion produces three forms of leaves: (i) cylinder-like photosynthetic leaves that extend above ground, (ii) broad, thick leaves in which food is stored, and (iii) thin, scale leaves around outside of the bulb.
