how retroviruses are an exception to the unidirectional information flow?

Dear Student.
Please find below the solution to the asked query.

The expression of genetic material DNA occurs through the production of proteins which involves two steps -
transcription - DNA to RNA, and
translation - RNA to proteins.
This unidirectional flow of information was described as the central dogma of molecular biology by FHC Crick in 1958.
In 1970, M. Temin and D Baltimore explained that some viruses have RNA as their genetic material. These are called retroviruses. They use an enzyme called reverse transcriptase during the process of synthesis of DNA from their genetic material RNA. This process is called reverse transcription and as the name suggests, th process is opposite of transcription. Thus, it was shown that retroviruses (such as HIV) synthesise DNA from RNA.
